Meet the Teacher

When I first told my family I was teaching first grade, they laughed at me. When I meet people and eventually add to the conversation that I'm a first grade teacher, I get the "Are you serious?" look. I've never really understood it, but to the outside world, I somehow give the impression that I hate children.

I'll admit it, sometimes it feels that way when I'm seated next to a crying child in a restaurant. Or when they run past me on the beach and kick sand on my face while I'm trying to peacefully bask in the sun. Or when they keep bumping my chair on the airplane when I'm just trying to pretend they don't exist.

Then, enter my home to see that half my bookcase is loaded with children's books and that my desk is scattered with workbooks, stickers and a lesson planning book. Enter my classroom where I spend 50+ hours per week. Perhaps then, people will see where my heart truly belongs.

  3. I just found your blog, and I love your honesty! I think working with children all day can make us all feel the same way about children when we are "off duty." I LOVE children - I just don't want to manage any other than my own when I'm not at work! (I know people at restaurants etc.. don't necessarily want anyone to manage their kids, but since managing small people is what I do, it's just ingrained to think I'm doing something wrong by just sitting there! I never say a word though!) I explained to my brother (an accountant) that it would be like someone bringing him a stack of W-2's to the table every time he goes out to eat! :) I don't think it's a bad thing to admit it.....when you give your all to kids, for most of your waking hours, you deserve a break! By the way, you don't look grumpy in your pictures!
